The Sony PRS-700BC E-Book
Among the many competitors of the Amazon Kindle, of the pioneering e-book readers in the market, Sony has always been a formidable forerunner, giving Amazon a good run for its money. The Sony PRS-700BC is the latest model in Sony’s e-book reader range. Its predecessor, the Sony PRS-505 was a huge success and because of that, there is a huge anticipation on the new model. Here is a quick look at Sony’s latest offering.
One of the biggest improvements in this new model is its new touch screen. Readers can now 
turn pages by sliding their fingers across the 6" screen, much like how it would work on an iPod touch or iPhone. The new touch screen allows many functions to be performed on the screen, reducing the need for physical buttons on the outer casing. Besides the reduced amount of buttons, the design of the new Sony PRS-700BC is very similar to the older model. It is also slightly thicker than the PRS-505.
One of the biggest flaws is the readability of the new screen. Because of the new touch screen feature, the screen display on the new model seems a little blurry at times. When compared to my older model, the 700BC’s screen seems to have poorer visibility. Nevertheless it is still good enough to get through a book. The new model has an improved internal storage with 20MB of storage space. If you need more storage, you can use the reader with a SD card.
All in all, other than slight improvements in specs and storage, there is very little to differentiate the Sony PRS-700BC from other e-book readers. Compared to the new Amazon Kindle 2 and other e-book readers, Sony’s model does not fare well, whether in terms of price or functionality.
