A Store That Has It All!
If you wish to download e-books and read them without trouble, you would require at least three major items. The first is the hardware. This could be a computer, a personal digital assistant or PDA, or a dedicated device. The hardware allows you to download and display the contents of the electronic e-books. The second item that you would need is known as the reader. The reader is the software that displays the text stored in the hardware. The third item is the e-book itself. You could call the e-books as digitized books.
The format of the online books provided by the library of e-books should be compatible with the reader. Further, the reader should also be compatible with the operating system of the computer or the device. This might sound highly complicated to you. However, once you understand the principles behind e-books reading and the e-books available at any digital e-books store, you would realize that is quite simple. If you have a standard text editor like WordPad or similar word processor, you would be able to read any plain text e-book or any ASCI file. Your standard browser is more than enough to read any HTML file. On the other hand, certain business e-books might be in proprietary formats. You would need appropriate software that is compatible with those formats.
The most common reader is the Adobe Reader. This reader reads all PDF files. The portable document format or PDF is the favorite of majority of online books, files, and documents. The hand-held devices like iPod touch, iPhone, BlackBerry, PocketPC, Palm OS, Macintosh, Windows Mobile Smartphone, OQO, Symbian, etc. support a software version known as eReader. Several other readers like eBook Library that supports Sony Reader, which could be used on the Reader Digital Book of Sony are also available in the market. However, efforts are on to develop a standard, universal format for e-books. The International Digital Publishing Forum had come out with an .ePub format and Sony, Adobe, and Google had accepted that format. It is to be seen whether other publishers would also follow suit.
